U'14's News
Saturday 16th June 2007 - U'14 CHAMPIONSHIPS - HAYLE
Everyone arrived very promply under grey skies knowing that we were in Heat 1 of Round 1! A bit of a shame then to discover that the 2 teams in that heat had pulled out and we were to race in the final heat instead!! Luckily the gazebo provided shelter from the downpour that happened shortly after arriving!
So 3 hours later our U'14 crew finally got to race in Brisons against Cadgwith 2 in Taran and Helford 2 in Azook. It was a tough heat which we just won in the second fastest time of the whole day!
FIRST ROUND HEAT 8 - 1st Padstow (3.52min), 2nd Cadgwith 2 (3.54min), 3rd Helford 2 (4.20min)
I guess it was sod's law when we were then drawn to row in the first race of Round 2! But with their muscles warmed up, they stormed along well in front!
SECOND ROUND HEAT 1 - 1st Padstow (4.14min), 2nd Salcombe 2 (4.39min), 3rd Torridge 1 (5.11)
The wind was very blustery making the times very varied for different races, and it certainly got more windy as the afternoon progressed.
The Quarter Finals proved to be a tough race, but our crew pulled ahead by a length towards the end of the race, in what was by far the fastest quarter!
QUARTER FINALS HEAT 1 - 1st Padstow (Golden Gear 4.03min), 2nd Helford 1 (Rose 4.09min), 3rd Salcombe 1 (Senara 4.18min)
QUARTER FINALS HEAT 2 - 1st Cadgwith 2 (Taran 4.23min), 2nd Torridge 2 (Azook 4.25min), 3rd Mounts Bay (Brisons 4.39min)
QUARTER FINALS HEAT 3 - 1st Penryn (Golden Gear 4.20min), 2nd Rame (Rose 4.31min), 3rd Roseland 1 (Senara 4.57min)
So on to the Semi Finals and we had a really great race with lovely rowing and an easy win. The second semi was much tougher, giving Penryn their first real test, though they won convincingly!
SEMI FINALS HEAT 1 - 1st Padstow (Taran 4.22min), 2nd Cadgwith 2 (Brisons 4.29min), 3rd Torridge 2 (Azook 4.32min)
SEMI FINALS HEAT 2 - 1st Penryn (Golden Gear 3.40min), 2nd Helford 1 (Senara 3.47min), 3rd Salcombe1 (Rose 4.09min)
THE FINAL! - What a race! With supporters running along side the crews and shouting and cheering, it was very close for 2 thirds of the race! Then Penryn started to pull away a little and Padstow and Helford fought it out for 2nd place. In the end Penryn won by a length, and Helford just got second by a foot!! All 3 crews showed fantastic spirit and the rowing was excellent!
Well done to our fantastic U'14's: Cam, Mikey, Molly, George, Rachael and Laura and not forgetting the best u'14 Cox in the World - Helen!! We are so proud of you all!!

Saturday 15th July - U'14 CHAMPIONSHIPS - HAYLE Well what a day! 26 Crews arrived with beautiful clear blue skies and a light breeze at Copperhouse Pool. After the first round our A Crew were in 6th place overall (time 3.49m). They then had a cracking second round to finish with the fastest time (3.43m). The wind was really getting up by the quarter finals making the starting lines awkward (so I'm told!) but, in what turned out to be the same line up as the final, they had another good row and finished this round in 3rd place (3.45min). They then won their semi final in the fastest time again (3.46m) and lined up with Helford A and the Scillies in the Final. It was such an exciting race with supporters running and cheering the length of the pool! It was very close the whole way finishing with Helford in first place, followed 4 seconds later by our crew and Scillies just behind in third. A fantastic race and great to know their are plenty of young rowers showing so much enthusiasm! Well done all of you!! The B Crew having only rowed once as a crew, and 4 of the 6 having rowed less than 4 times ever, put in a great effort and finished second in the Plate Race final (20th overall). We're all really proud of every one of you! Big thanks go to Helen and Sally who have been coaching the crews and coxed in the finals! Helen said "It was the most stressful thing I've ever done!" and Sally barely spoke all day for nerves!!! She also wanted to say how well our crews behaved and got themselves organised! A Crew (6-Greg, 5-Mikey, 4-Liam, 3-Tom, 2-George, 1-Laura)
