Newquay Mens Championships - 26th & 27th September 2009

Mens A (6-Greg, 5-Chris O, 4-Scott, 3-Chris Mc, 2-Tom N, 1-Spud) - 14th

Mens B (6-Mikey, 5-Patrick, 4-John O, 3-Jonathan, 2-Paul, 1-Murty) - ? Not sure Jonathan thinks 66th....t.b.c.

Unbelievably another relatively calm weekend for the Men's Championships! The Mens A had an easy first round and romped home 1st. The 2nd Round was a bit tougher, up against Caradon (eventual winners) and Helford. They were in 2nd place but then a wave helped carry Helford surfing right past them (Newquay luck again!!)

Sunday morning and first of the Quarter final races. Lovely calm conditions but for some reason quite slow times for the whole heat. They finished in 3rd behind Caradon A & Falmouth B. So sadly a semi final place was so near....yet so far! Roll on next year! They get closer every year - will 2010 be the one!!?....

Mens B had a good race in Round One but just not quick enough for a Round Two place.....there's always next year!!!

 

Newquay U'16's Championships - Sun 13th Sept 2009

U'16's (6-Woody, 5-Fordy, 4-Cam, 3-Mikey, 2-Siobhan, 1-Dan) - 7th

We had a couple of disasters the week before the Championships as Ash broke his elbow and Matt broke his collar bone (thanks Cam!!). So luckily Siobhan and Dan stepped up to the mark to complete the crew! So Mikey was the only 'qualified' U'16 rower, the others were U'14 apart from Dan who was only 12! Still they all rowed like stars and came 2nd in their first round race.

The wind had got up a bit for their semi final and they had a tough race but they rowed brilliantly and missed out on a place in the final by just a few seconds. A couple of years from now....watch this space!!

 

Newquay Ladies Championships - 12th & 13th September 2009

Ladies A (6-Rachel, 5-Helen, 4-Annie, 3-Emma, 2-Sarah, 1-Ali) - 13th

Ladies B (6-Roz, 5-Sally, 4-Polly, 3-Kate, 2-Nat, 1-Adelle) - 76th

Oh well, all over for another year and as usual Newquay proved as tricky as ever - it's about getting some luck as much as hard work!!!

Ladies A crew had a relatively easy first race of the day at 9.30am which we won, and then waited until around 4.30pm for our second round race. Beaten to 2nd place by Falmouth B crew.

Ladies B crew had a much tougher race as not only did they have Caradon A, Caradon B, Swanage A & Coverack A up against them, but they were also in the 12th heat. The wind had got up steadily through the day and the heats had got slower and slower. So despite rowing well they didn't get through to the 2nd round (needed a bit of that elusive Newquay luck!)

Sunday morning and the Quarter Finals - again first race of the day and totally flat calm. We had a great race and came 3rd in the heat, beaten by Roseland A & Rock A. There followed a little confusion as to whether we had got through to the semi's and then due to a disqualification both Newquay & Padstow just got in! 

The Semi proved pretty tough - up against Caradon, Roseland, Mounts Bay, Newquay & Teign - we had a great first leg, but last round the mark meant lots of wash and we went backwards! Finally finished last by quite a long way! Still never mind! 13th place out of 93 crews is nothing to be ashamed of!!

So back to the drawing board!!!....We love Newquay really!!!

A humid, grey day and very choppy sea early on!! The rowing conditions did improve a bit as the day went on but it drizzled on and off all afternoon! Still really good results for the club!

Wow! Such an exciting day! Perfect conditions - no rain & not too hot! Padstow had 3 crews again:

C Crew - 6-Luke, 5-Charlie, 4-Scarlett, 3-Phoebe, 2-Daniel G, 1-Matt - 21st & 3rd in Plate Race final

All 3 crews showed excellent standards of rowing and sportsmanship & we are incredibly proud of them.

We had a great day! Warm and sometimes dull, sometimes sunny as you can see from the photos! We were very short on juniors (as several had been nicked for a footie tournament!) but still entered an U'14 & U'16 crew and they did us proud! Also notable Mens A & B and Mixed crews all came 3rd!! Pretty good results over all!!

The Mixed race was hilarious! You had to run down the beach, get in the gigs, row 50 strokes on the wrong side then swap to your normal side, go round the green buoy and back, then number 1 had to race up the beach! We stayed on the beach until sunset and then rowed back! A really lovely day! Thanks Rock for the great organisation - as always a great event!

Charlestown - Saturday 23rd May 2009

Well it was an absolutely beautiful day at Charlestown and nice, flat conditions! Still, that first leg is a killer!! The Ladies were a bit short on numbers, so the A Crew was made up of  3 A Crew and 3 B Crew, who then had to row the B race immediately after (aaahhh!!). The Mens A Crew were unlucky with their result as they had a couple of pile ups on the marks! But we were one of only 2 clubs who entered every race and the results overall were pretty good for the first race of our season!
