Garden Furniture to Survive the Harsh Cornwall Weather

Sunny Cornwall

It is no secret that the weather in Cornwall  is extreme, and particularly bad this week, with the recent harsh weather effecting many areas, leaving them without power.

As we are still in the heart of winter, it’s hard to imagine even thinking about garden furniture, but once you take the cover off your old wooden set, you may find the harsh conditions have left it looking a bit worse for wear.

This is because the harsh sea spray, and variable temperatures, slowly erode wooden garden furniture over time, leaving you with rotten benches and chairs which won’t last the rest of the summer without falling through!

So I have been on the hunt for some more durable, heavy duty garden furniture, that is preferably weatherproof, so that I don’t need to worry about falling through my chair in the middle of a family bbq!

Online research

From what I have found, the best two materials for a weatherproof furniture set, are synthetic rattan (UV stabilised, with aluminium frames), and Winawood furniture.

These two seem to have the best reviews, and have the ability to withstand harsh weather conditions all year round left outdoors.

Choosing My Garden Furniture

From the many online garden furniture retailers, I decided to choose They seemed to have the best choice of rattan garden furniture, including dining sets, and reclining rattan, which is actually the one I decided to go with. The rocking reclining rattan arm chair looks fantastic with the built in footrest!

They also seem to be the largest stockist of Winawood in the UK, so might be worth a go if you prefer that style of garden furniture.

A little explanation on why and what. So I chose UV stabilised rattan, as this is judged to be able to withstand the sun, from which most rattan fades and goes brittle. The aluminium frame is also essential, as if you go with steel, it tends to rust after a prolonged period of snow or ice (which we get a lot of in Cornwall!).

There are obviously cheaper options at the supermarkets, but if they break after 1 year, it’s a big waste of money if you ask me.

Lets hope the Truro weather holds up! Not that it will impact my synthetic rattan furniture!

Until next time.

Update October 2016 – Winawood

This new video helps describe the Winawood furniture range, with changes to the Sandwick range including bench colours in white and duck egg green, and the original range being discontinued. We still recommend Winawood furniture as it is a brilliant product, and that is easily the best provider online.
